영국 학생들은 의무 교육이 끝나는 16세에 진로를 결정하게 된다. 대학에 진학 하려는 경우 영국의 입시인 A-level을 준비하는 과정인 Sixth form을 시작하며 직업 교육 과정에 입학하거나 바로 직업을 얻기도 한다
대학에 진학하고자 하는 경우 GCE(General Certificate of Education)
A-level(Advanced level)을 공부한다. A-level의 준비 과정인 Sixth form 은 일반적으로 2년 과정이며 학생들은 3~4과목을 선택하여 공부한 뒤 시험을 치르게 된다. |
- 2년의 Academic과정으로 학생들은 일반적으로 첫 번째 학년에 4-5개 과목을 선택하여 학습을 하며, 두 번째 학년이 되면서 성적에 따라 과목을 줄이는 것이 일반적이다.
- 과목 선택 : 외국어, Science, Humanity를 포함한 약 30개 과목 중 대학 진학학과에 따라 신중하게 과목을 선정해야 한다.
- 시험 평가 : 내부평가(Coursework)와 외부평가로 구성 되어있다.
- A-level에 진학하기 위해서는 최소 GCSE 5개 과목에서 Grade C이상이 되어야 한다.

영국의 대학에 진학하기 위해서 필수적으로 치러야 하는 일종의 ‘고등학교 졸업 자격시험인 동시에 대학입학시험이다.
- GESE과정을 마친 뒤 Sixth Form과정에 진학하여 2년간의 교과과정을 이수한 학생들이 18세에 치르게 되며, 시험과목은 3~4과목 선택으로 입학하고자 하는 대학의 전공학과에서 요구하는 과목을 선택해야 한다.
- 이 시험은 논술(Essay)형식으로 치러지며, 5단계의 성적(Grade A, B, C, D)으로 구분되어 평가된다. 일반적으로 3개 이상의 과목을 합격하고 해당 대학에서 요구하는 합격 최저점을 통과해야만 희망대학에 합격할 수 있다.
- 대학 지원은 최대한 6개 (2008년부터는 5개 대학)까지 선정하여 지원할 수 있으나, Oxford와 Cambridge대학교는 이 시험 결과와 함께 자체적으로 시행하는 입학시험과 인터뷰를 거쳐 최종 합격자를 결정하게 된다.
A-level은 2년 과정으로서 첫해에는 4~5과목을 선택하여 공부하며 1년이 끝날 무렵 AS Level 시험을 치르게 됩니다. 둘째 해에는 시험 본 과목 중 성적이 좋은 3~4 과목을 더욱 깊게 계속 공부하여 A2 시험을 치르게 된다.
이 두 시험(AS시험과 A2 시험)의 합산이 최종 A-Level 의 결과가 되며, A부터 E까지의 등급으로 나누어진 성적으로 대학진학이 이루어진다.
2년 동안 공부할 이들 과목의 선택은 매우 신중히 결정 되어야 한다.
그 이유는 첫째, 수준이 매우 높기 때문에 학생의 능력을 고려 해야 한다.
둘째, 이들 과목의 선택이 학사과정의 전공선택을 결정하기 때문이다. 예를 들면, Engineering을 전공하고자 할 경우 수학, 과학은 필수로 들어가며, 의대 진학을 원할 경우 수학, 화학은 필수이며 생물과목 좋다 |
