GCSE
중등 교육 수료 고사이며 스코틀랜드에는 GCSE 대신 이에 상응하는 SCE(Scottish Certificate of Education) standard Grade가 있다.
GCSE의 경우, 학생들은 2년 동안 5-10 과목을 선택하여 공부한 뒤 시험을 치르게 된다.
우리나라에서 중학교 3학년을 마친 경우 GCSE과정이 꼭 요구되지는 않는다.
다만, 옥스퍼드, 캠브리지 대학이나 의대에 지원하는 경우 GCSE성적도 요구되는 경우가 있다.
영국의 중등교육을 받는 학생들은 16세 (Y11)에 치르게 되는 시험의 일종으로 “중학교 졸업 자격 시험”이라 할 수 있다. 13세 (Y9)의 학생들은 다양한 종류의 GCSE과목 수업을 듣게 되며 14세 (Y10)에 과목을 선택하게 된다. 이 시험은 중학생들의 학업능력을 측정하는 시험으로, 그 동안 학교에서 배운 내용을 확인하는 문제들과 사실에 근거한 내용을 순차적이고 논리적으로 피력할 수 있는 지적 능력을 측정하는 문제, 그리고 이러한 지식들에 대한 응용능력을 평가하는 문제, 기타 기술 과목에 대해서는 그 분야게 어느 정도 숙달되어 있으며 실무에 얼마나 잘 활용할 수 있는지 등을 측정하는 문제들로 구성되어 있다.
기본적으로 영어, 수학, 과학은 GCSE를 하는 동안 공부하게 되면, 대다수의 학교에서는 영문학, 제2 외국어, design and Technology, 종교(종종Short 혹은 Half course로 받게 된다)ICT를 요구하고 있다. 기본적으로 9개의 과목을 들으며 한 과목은 학생들의 선택의지에 맡기어 총 10과목을 기본적으로 듣게 된다. 2년의 GCSE코스가 끝나고서 학생들은 각 과목에 대해 Grade를 받게 되며 Grade는 최고 A*를 시작으로 A, B, C, D, E, F, 최하 G까지 점수로 측정되어 지고, 실패한 과목은 U(Unclassified)로 이 Grade를 받는 과목은 Certificate의 과목에서 제외된다. (A*~C등급을 받은 과목은 Sixth form때 A-level을 할 수 있다.)대부분의 대학에서는 영어, 수학 그리고 학생들의 A-level때 수강한 과목에서 C혹은 그 보다 더 나은 점수를 요구하고 있다.
대개의 과목에서 한 개 혹은 더 많은 coursework을 해 내야하며, coursework은 학생의 마지막 Grade평가에 20-60%의 영향을 미치게 되면 좀 더 많은 연습이 필요한 과목 Design and Technology 그리고 음악은 종종 보다 강도 높은 coursework이 요구된다. 더불어 GCSE는 두 가지 다른 단계의 시험으로 나누어 지게 되는데 Grade A+~D를 획득한 학생은 Higher그리고 Grade C~G의 경우엔 Foundation이라 하여 Foundation Tier에서 G를 얻지 못하는 경우 Higher에서 U(E를 받는 경우)를 받는 경우엔 실패의 결과를 얻게 된다. 시험은 5개의 평가단 에서 공동으로 주관하며, GCSE의 결과는 8월의 4째 주(A-level 결과 일주일 후 )에 받게 되며, 이 결과는 학생들이 현재 다니는 학교에서 찾아갈 수 있다.

Speaking : 연극이나 토론, 대화에 참여하는 것에 의해 평가된다. 주제는 주어지며 모든 Speaking test는 녹음이 된다.
